On the way back, Benny studied Ruben’s papers, angrily mumbling to himself.

“Hmmm … checks to Carl Debouche aka Hans Eisele … SS doctor that murdered hundreds in Buchenwald, Natzweiler and Dachau. Sentenced to death in Nuremberg, kindly released in 1952, escaped to Egypt. Georg Fisher, aka Alois Brunner. Adolf Eichmann’s assistant. Fled West Germany for Syria in 1954. Wilhelm Beisner, the SS Sturmbannführer that worked in Einsatzkommandos in Serbia and Tunisia—now supplying arms to Middle East terror groups and paying Erich Rolff for ‘services to the BND.’ Johannes ‘Omar Amin’ von Leers, a specialist on the ‘Jewish Question’ in Josef Goebbels’ propaganda department. Now a great friend of the Grand Mufti and the head of Egyptian Anti-Israeli bureau …”

He turned to me. “Your trip to Trabzon brought some interesting results.”

“Are you surprised?”

“Yes. I’d like to claim that I had an intuition, but no, not at all. It has not been officially disclosed yet: the rockets that the Egyptians launched have been developed by Nazi scientists. That’s right, some of Hitler’s most senior engineers, men who’d worked during the war at the research base at Peenemünde where the Third Reich’s most advanced weaponry was developed, are now in Egypt. And more scientists and military and security experts are coming. There are clandestine networks financing and protecting them. Ahmet Yavuz was using the Nazi money to finance Nazis and terrorists. The ultimate insult: they took the gold from dead Jews, literally ripped it out of their mouths, and now use it to pay people that want to finish Hitler’s job.”

“Are you going to look for Yavuz?”

“We’ll let Ruben lead, follow the money. I can’t put internal resources on this, until I know where the leak came from.”

“How about the Germans that Yavuz may have met back then? Remember the mention of the uncle?”

“Right. That’s why I asked for the list. We don’t know if Yavuz met that mysterious uncle in Erzurum, but it’s a lead.”

He read the notes that Van copied for us: “Carl von Feurath, attached to the 4th Turkish Army, followed operations against the Armenians. Oscar Werner von der Mulenburg, German consult in Erzurum 1915-16. Peter Klopher, Vice-Consul in Erzurum, 1915-16. Oh look, a familiar name: Rudolph Höss, German cavalry regiment.”

“Höss? The commandant of Auschwitz?”

“The one and only. He must have learned a few extermination techniques in Turkey.”

There must have been something in my face because his expression changed.

“David, Eichmann was only the beginning. I know it’s been seventeen years since the war and we have barely started, but we will settle all accounts.”
